WHERE THE SPIRIT IS ALIVE
Who We AreTHE SPIRIT IS ALIVE AT WEST SIDE
OUR VISION
VISION STATEMENT: We envision faithful, fruitful, joyful disciples of Jesus Christ equipped with the Word of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit to redeem the souls of all that seek Him.
OUR MISSION
The West Side United Methodist Church is a faith-sharing congregation meeting the ongoing spiritual and physical well being
of its members and community through servant ministries, discipleship training and worship
The Mission of the West Side Church is;
(1) To help people to have the assurance of their salvation through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the born again experience through the work of the Holy Spirit.
(2) To nurture people through God's Word and prayer so that they become the disciples of Jesus Christ.
(3) To proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the end of the earth (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8)
(4) To minister to our second generation so that they can have the inheritance of good faith in Jesus Christ and their own identity.
(5) To prepare people for the second coming of Jesus Christ our Lord through study of Biblical prophesies
Our Vision describes our church’s future. It is where God is calling us to go.
Our mission reminds us why we’re here.

West Side is a United Methodist Church. We have long been involved in outreach programs to help “our neighbors” and to
increase our spiritual health. Since its beginning the Methodist Church has been involved in service. The Thrift Shop and
Save The People food program date back to the early 1970’s. West Side Methodist is part of the Skylands District of the
Greater New Jersey Conference.
As parts of the Body of Christ, we are the only feet, hands, bank account, and mouthpiece that Jesus has on this earth.
Volunteers embody Christian love in action by bringing their talents to Christian service.
To the world you might be one person; to one person you could be the world.
They will know you are a Christian by your love.
GODS ARE WHATEVER YOU WORSHIP, STOP BEING A POLYTHEIST.
ANALYZE HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME.
PREDICTIONS FOR 2019
THE BIBLE WILL STILL CONTAIN THE ANSWERS
PRAYER WILL STILL WORK.
JESUS WILL CONTINUE TO LOVE YOU.
GOD IS NOT CONCERNED WITH OUR ABILITY NOR OUR INABILITY.
GOD IS CONCERNED WITH OUR AVAILABILITY.

HISTORY OF WEST SIDE:
NO GOD KNOW GOD
NO PEACE KNOW PEACE
West Side Methodist Church started in the summer of 1894. The first service was held on the lawn of Dr. Theodore A. K. Gessler’s home and because of the response of the congregation, Dr. Gessler
suggested that a chapel be built on land that he had looked in to that might be donated for that purpose.
On November 18, 1899, Byram Cove Land Company and Charles Noble gave a deed of trust for land
at River Styx, on the Lake, to Dr. Gessler and Richard R. Edwards, the first Mayor of Hopatcong. This
conveyance was made subject to the use of the Religious Society, known as the Baptist Congregation.
The church sanctuary was used only in the summer, because there was no heat in the Sanctuary. The
basement served as the Sunday school all year long, since a pot-bellied stove heated it. West Side
Church was a non-denominational church in its early years; all were welcome. It supplied the residents
the needs for summer, as well as all year long, no matter what their religious affiliations were. West Side
joined the United Methodist in 1948 and was a circuit church until it became a full time Church in 1956.
In 1960, the present property was purchased from the Maxim Dee Estates to accommodate the growing
needs of the Church. A fire on October 18, 1969 destroyed the interior of the River Styx Church, leaving
services held in various buildings until March 14, 1971. The current West Side United Methodist Church
building was dedicated on March 21, 1971.
West Side is a people oriented Church with many missions including, a Thrift Shop and Save The People
(STP food distribution program), both started in the 1970’s, food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and
Easter time.t
West Side is open to everyone. We invite you to visit and perhaps you will stay awhile!
